Frequently Asked Questions

No, if you use it correctly. Place the prescribed quantity of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products in each drain. Let it remain in the standing water in toilet bowls or sumps. Rinse SEPTIC REMEDY’s products into other drain traps with ONE pint of water per spoonful, preferably lukewarm. The bacteria should be left in traps, undisturbed by usage or flushing, until they’ve had time to move into and embed themselves in the waste inside traps and lines, begin to feed, reproduce, and multiply. They need an undisturbed retention time of at least two hours. Eight hours, or overnight, is ideal. Once the bacteria have penetrated the waste matter in adequate numbers, water can’t wash them away until the traps and pipes are perfectly clean.

SEPTIC REMEDY’s products bacteria multiply inside your system at a fantastic rate. The culture will continue to increase as long as organic matter remains in the system unless they are killed by chemicals or detergents or scalding hot water. This factor makes SEPTIC REMEDY’s products very economical to use. If you don’t use it, how much will the alternative cost you? How much have they been costing you each year? For most users, SEPTIC REMEDY’s products costs far less than the money they’ve been spending on halfway symptom treating measures that don’t eliminate the root cause of their troubles.

Sometimes it’s necessary to use more than directed, in extremely abused or overloaded systems. Our directions cover the majority of problems, depending on conditions, loading, type and size of system. With most systems, you can cut the amount you use, once like-new operation is restored and full control is established. If you try cutting down, lessen the amount gradually. But don’t lessen the frequency of application. If drains slow down again, you may increase the amount until you find the optimum dosage for you find the exact amount of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products you need. If you’re going to be in error until need, use plenty and be sure to get the job done. That’s much more economical than saving a little of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products, BUT FAILING TO GET the problem solved.

Yes. NORTHILL will attack any organic matter, animal or vegetable, which was once alive.

Yes. When iron or steel is cast, it is poured into molds made of impacted wet sand. Sometimes a line contains much inorganic material. After the intermixed organic waste is liquefied and runs away, sand like granuals are left. These can impact in a turn or at a rough spot, forming an effective mold or dam. A cable can easily penetrate this, and allow water to flush the granules away, once flow begins. Regular maintenance treatments with SEPTIC REMEDY’s products will prevent their reforming.

Almost indefinitely, as long as it remains dry and unexposed to air.

The sides and tops are the most important areas in pipes or lines. NORTHILL bacteria cultures aren’t affected by gravity. They’ll grow around the entire circumference of pipes, as long as there’s moisture and waste for food.

Probably not. The recently accumulated, fast digesting soft center should be gone when you complete the “purge” treatment. Your drains will be flowing so well you may think all the build-up is gone. But if you have an old, badly abused system, inspection will probably show a hard coat remaining on the walls. If it’s left there, new wastes can build back more than they could on clean walls. Regular maintenance treatment with SEPTIC REMEDY’s products prevents re-forming of new masses on this residue, and will complete the slow, final removal of these flinty, hard deposits.

Absolutely not. It’s impossible to run a large pipe or line to clean everything out of it. Such a device would be too big to go around the short turns and bends in your lines. A mechanical device that can pass through lines usually isn’t more than 20 to 25 per cent of the size of the line interior. At best, gadgets can give only temporary relief, by poking a hole through the middle of the mess. As the head of the cutter is withdrawn, the gelatinous mass remaining in the line begins to close together again.

SEPTIC REMEDY’s products will open most drains or lines in three to fourteen days, depending on several factors. Some lines, however, have been terribly abused by the types and quantities of wastes fed into them, or by repeated use of chemicals. These lines may even fail completely, and be unused for months or years. Such situations are virtually hopeless, unless you remove the line and replace it with a new one. Lines like these may be powder-dry inside. They must first be flooded to overflowing with water. Water must be added with every treatment, keeping the contents of the line wet while SEPTIC REMEDY’s products progresses through the plug. If you add water and SEPTIC REMEDY’s products every day, the bacteria will finally eat through. It may take a few weeks – but we’re talking about an extreme case now; one which would be hopeless without SEPTIC REMEDY’s products.

Yes. If a drain or line is completely stopped, the Friendly Bacteria can’t be carried the full length of the line to work from the channel out to the walls. They must grow from the drain completely through the length of the stoppage, which will take time. Using a plunger or cable should allow at least partial use of the drain until SEPTIC REMEDY’s products can restore it completely. The first stage of digesting hard solids, before the waste is liquefied, produces a heavy, gelatinous material. In extremely bad cases, this material sometimes breaks loose and falls from the top of the pipe, leaving a temporary block- age on the bottom of the channel. Using a plunger or cable is advisable in such a case. If you follow the easy directions that come with each container of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products, this probably won’t happen. If it does, you’ll know without a doubt that SEPTIC REMEDY’s products does work!

Acid or caustic drain cleaners are very dangerous to use. They burn, maim, blind and kill thousands of people every year. Ask your plumber. These chemicals are harmful to pipes, fixtures and traps, and especially to garbage disposers. Drain pipe openers depend on generation of intense heat to melt grease. At best, they’re only effective on the bottoms of lines, for compact stoppages close to the point of application. They dilute and soon lose their heat. When the heat is gone, the effect is gone. SEPTIC REMEDY’s products micro-organisms are not used up because they reproduce giving continuous action and unlimited distances. work through massive amounts of waste for unlimited distances.

Yes. A severe stoppage may take from three to thirty-six hours or longer, to remove. If your drain is running, even slowly, the bacteria can be carried along, and work from the middle of the pipe out to the walls. If the drain has stopped completely, let your plumber run a cable through first, to open a small flow. Then SEPTIC REMEDY’s products will take all the build-up out – which equipment can’t do.

Absolutely not. SEPTIC REMEDY’s products only attacks dead organic matter. You can mix SEPTIC REMEDY’s products with water and leave it in an aluminum pan or other type of container. It won’t act on it at all.

No. It’s perfectly safe to use SEPTIC REMEDY’s products around plants, pets, children and you.

Never is a long time. Especially in public places, where great numbers of people gather, one of them can finally produce the unusual or impossible condition. SEPTIC REMEDY’s products can digest anything that belongs in an organic waste system. Blockage can also be caused by operating a defective garbage disposer, or not using plenty of water during its operation to carry the bulk through the line. SEPTIC REMEDY’s products would eventual-ly digest the material – but you would have the blockage with you during the digestion time, unless you removed the blockage manually. Unscreened drain openings which allow broken glass, plastic straws or filter cigarette tips to enter the drains in great numbers can block drains with inorganic material which bacteria can’t digest. If the care that reasonable people use is exercised, and barring freak accident, proper “Purge” and regular maintenance usage of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products should eliminate slow-running and backed-up drains permanently. Almost all these problems are caused by the entire length of the interior of your pipes and system being restricted by choking build-up accumulations. SEPTIC REMEDY’s products eliminates these.

The dosage of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products will vary, depending on the number of people using the system, frequency of use, the amount of grease from kitchens, and the amount of suspended material from garbage disposers. Water consumption and seasonal changes may influence the working characteristics of the system. Optimum efficiency and economy can be obtained by maintaining a regular schedule of treatments. If the system has not been cleaned recently, use SEPTIC REMEDY’s products initially at the rate of one pound of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products for every 500 gallons of capacity up to 2,000 gallons. For systems with more than 2,000 gallons capacity, apply one pound of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products for each additional 1,000 gallons.

No. Back-flushing and thorough pumping may remove solids. But the system isn’t going to work thoroughly until it has a new, balanced culture of all the bacteria types necessary for complete digestion. Depending on natural supply is a hit-or-miss gamble. Why not get the laboratory-controlled, balanced formula in SEPTIC REMEDY’s products? Pumping will do very little to help your clogged drain field. Proper use of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products will restore it to new, clean, full operating ability.

No. SEPTIC REMEDY’s products digests and liquefies only dead organic matter. SEPTIC REMEDY’s products will break down dead organic matter which has become entangled with roots, causing massive build-ups in many systems. Tree roots want this waste for food. When lines are clean, roots don’t bother nearly so much. Clean roots can more readily absorb a root-killer you might use.

Garbage disposers require at least 30 per cent more tile field, because they increase soil clogging and double the load on the tank. Therefore, an increased amount of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products is required when using a garbage disposer with a septic system. The formula will adjust itself to take care of the extra cellulose matter introduced into the system. SEPTIC REMEDY’s products can be used in the disposer itself, since bacteria won’t act on the inorganic material of which the disposer is made.

Many disinfectants used in laundry and in cleaning toilet fixtures kill bacteria in the system, or inhibit reproduction of the organisms. Moderate use of disinfectants will not ordinarily affect the operation of systems, because each application of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products contains more than enough new bacteria to replace those killed by disinfectants used in reasonable amounts. Detergents contain inorganic compounds which can inhibit the action of bacteria. SEPTIC REMEDY’s products contains strains of bacteria which have developed tolerances for these compounds. Each application of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products contains more than enough bacteria to overcome the inhibiting action of detergents.

Yes, as long as it is wet. The material may be kept wet by adding clear water between NOR- THILL applications. The “Purge” instructions in the container will tell you how.

Urinal odors are caused by the digestive process of undesirable bacteria feeding on waste matter deposits which have built up in urinal drains. Heavy perfumes are often used to try to mask these odors, replacing a very offensive odor with one less offensive. SEPTIC REMEDY’s products gives the most effective, economical control because it eliminates the waste build-up which causes the odors. If there’s no waste build-up, there’s no malodorous decomposition. Don’t continue using perfumed crystals or cakes when you use SEPTIC REMEDY’s products. They’re unnecessary, and they may kill your Friendly Bacteria.

Definitely. Also the black algae in drinking fountain or refrigeration condensate drains.

By all means. Grease, sludge and scum are the dreaded enemies of septic systems. Unless these enemies are liquefied by bacterial digestion, they will be carried into the tile field, where they will quickly clog the drainage, rise to the surface and create annoying odors, which are a nuisance to your neighbors. The septic tank or cesspool must provide a favorable environment in which the essential bacteria can live, multiply, and liquefy organic waste. SEPTIC REMEDY’s products introduces new, healthy bacteria into the system to replace those killed by the germicidal effects of many house- hold cleaning compounds. The enzymes blended into SEPTIC REMEDY’s products provide the “vitamin pills” to spark immediate, lively action from the bacteria. It’s very important to apply SEPTIC REMEDY’s products to your drains on a regular maintenance schedule, to replace bacteria lost through natural attrition and the chemicals you will continue using in reasonable amounts.

The tile field or seep bed is the most important part of the septic system. It’s also the most expensive to repair or replace. Regular maintenance applications of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products in your drains, as prescribed in the maintenance schedule, will keep your traps and lines clean. The bacteria will pass into the tank and drain field, where they will keep the soil around the tile of seep bed free of grease and sludge, which block percolation into the ground. If your drain field is sluggish and malodorous, follow the dosage recommended for septic tank “purge”, but double the quantity of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products used in the drains until drainage returns to normal. Then revert to the regular maintenance schedule shown on the maintenance calendar. If your system has a dry well or junction box, make a slurry with 16 ounces of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products in two gallons of lukewarm water and pour it into the dry well or junction box, for immediate action there.

Yes. Rarely (in terms of percentage), an accumulation of acid in a system will read low enough below neutral 7 on the pH scale to pre- vent bacteria from working, or to kill them. You can tell if you have a high acid content by dipping a piece of litmus paper (available at some drug stores) into the waste or effluent and checking the result against the color chart. SEPTIC REMEDY’s products are sold with a money-back guarantee. If you should find an acid condition, your dealer is authorized to replace your SEPTIC REMEDY’s products at no further cost, after you have neutralized the acid condition. Then SEPTIC REMEDY’s products, used properly, will do the job. To neutralize the acid condition, add small amounts of lime or soda ash repeatedly and check with litmus paper until the contents of your system are “sweetened” to or near a neutral 7. Pumping the highly toxic content out first will make it easier to treat. Keep heavy amounts of acid out of your system, so SEPTIC REMEDY’s products Friendly Bacteria can continue to thrive. They will neutralize and cope with small amounts of acid entering the system occasionally.

The amount of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products to be used depends on the amount of organic waste introduced into the system. This, in turn, depends on the number of people using the system. For the average household of two to seven people, use SEPTIC REMEDY’s products on a maintenance basis in the amounts indicated on the maintenance calendar. Be sure to “purge” the system first.

The directions always mean “level”. Each container holds approximately 85 tablespoons of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products.

Absolutely. You get the results we say you will, or SEPTIC REMEDY’s products will cost you nothing if you buy the amount your system requires, and use it by our directions.

Sumps and grease traps are very troublesome parts of a sanitary system. There are certainly few more distasteful or tedious chores than climbing down into a sump to remove the grease and slime from controls, pumps and lines. Regular use of NORTHILL will eliminate this foul job. Controls often become jammed with waste build-up, and fail to shut off automatically after the water or liquid is pumped out. This can result in a burned-out pump or motor, expensive to repair. With SEPTIC REMEDY’s products, you can save much repair money.

Very definitely. Results show that odors have been reduced up to 90 per cent. It’s best to apply SEPTIC REMEDY’s products to a slough after direct rays of the sun are down, since when they’re applied to a shallow cover the micro-organisms are exposed to ultraviolet rays before they can penetrate deeply enough for good protection.

By the rate of flow. You can take the pipes apart, or look inside by removing a clean-out plug.

Yes. After direct treatment brings odor under control, maintenance applications in manholes or at other points will keep sewer lines clean and trouble-free, if there’s enough retention time for the bacteria to embed themselves in the waste build-up before being carried into the lagoon. After the bacteria feed and reproduce, they’ll end up working in the lagoon, too. You get more for your money by eliminating the expense of “dragging” sewer mains.

Yes. The same variation applies to other types of systems, too. Usually, bath or lavatory drains, or wherever people commonly wash their hair, are slowest to open. They often contain a large mass of hair (Partly composed of carotin, which is very hard to digest), shed body skin, and soap. Removing such a wad manually will usually allow prompt removal of the build-up in these lines. If not manually removed, this mass can delay full restoration of these lines by two to six weeks.

Everything else being equal, it requires more SEPTIC REMEDY’s products to “purge” a septic tank or a system that includes large grease traps. There are several hundred gallons of accumulated solids and chemical enemies of bacteria lying out there in the ground in your own miniature sewage treatment plant. This requires a massive first charge, plus “booster” shots. Why not get double duty from your investment, and let the “booster” shots “purge” all the drains and lines in and from your building? “Purging” your drains will clear them, and add the “booster” shots to the “purge” of your septic tank. Regular maintenance ap- plications in your drains will keep grease traps and septic tanks supplied with bacteria. SEPTIC REMEDY’s products usually gives the septic tank owner a better deal than he’d have being connected to a sewer. He gets a dependable system for much less cost than the assessment usually charged each month to users of sewer systems – who need SEPTIC REMEDY’s products, too, to keep their lines open.

Yes. SEPTIC REMEDY’s products will eliminate the source of waste-caused odors from your drains. Some floor drains aren’t used often enough to keep the trap just under the floor full of water, which acts as a “check valve” to stop sewer gases from coming back up the line and into your building. These gases are offensive. They can also be flammable or explosive. Even though you’ve cleaned your system with SEPTIC REMEDY’s products, be sure these drain traps are always full of water. The problem is most common during the low humidity which accompanies artificial heating of buildings in winter. Drain traps can dry out in hours.

Yes. For some 24-hour feeding operations, there’s a problem of when to apply SEPTIC REMEDY’s products. Usually it can be applied during the slow, early morning hours, when the drains can be let stand unused long enough to begin results. The “Purge” treatment may need to be continued several days longer than normal, to compensate for the fact that all the SEPTIC REMEDY’s products applied each time doesn’t have the opportunity to become established. These early morning hours may be the time when less responsible employees are on duty, but if the problems are bad enough, proper scheduling and follow-through are a small price to pay for the rewards to be gained from proper use of SEPTIC REMEDY’s products. Some high-volume drains receive very hot water steadily for long periods to heat lines to temperatures which will kill micro-organisms. Some carry great quantities of detergent or sanitizing chemicals, along with much waste volume. These conditions are found in only a small segment of institutions, business and industries. Cold, clear tap water should be run through these drains for a short while after each daily clean-up. Apply SEPTIC REMEDY’s products after cooling and flushing the system. The organisms will work until operations are resumed and the bacteria are killed by the excessive conditions. So SEPTIC REMEDY’s products must be applied after each day’s operation to start a replacement colony. SEPTIC REMEDY’s products will work in these extreme cases if given a reasonable chance. These are not conditions found in the great majority of systems. We’re making the facts available for those few who will need them.

Much more effective. Enzyme products are supposed to activate the bacteria already in your system, and help them to digest waste. But it’s impossible to activate something that doesn’t exist. If your system contains inadequate amounts of the right kinds of bacteria from natural sources, or if you’ve killed the bacteria in your system by putting acids, caustics, detergents and disinfectants in your drains – which is probably the case, if you have a stoppage problem applying enzymes alone will be useless. SEPTIC REMEDY’s products contains both a massive dose of Friendly Bacteria and the enzymes necessary to start them to work.

Yes. Colored ones, too, because they’re all made from organic substances.

Not if the container is kept closed and the SEPTIC REMEDY’s products is kept dry.

Absolutely, when the four reasonable conditions of their environment are present. These conditions do exist in most lines or systems, but occasionally we have a “people failure”, when an accident or unusual circumstance creates conditions in which bacteria cannot function or live. It is usually rather easy to find and correct the causes preventing their function if our directions are thoroughly read and followed, unless we’re like the little school boy who says, “This typewriter can’t spell.” Here are the four conditions:

    • 1). Water
    • 2). Temperature
    • 3). pH or non-toxicity
    • 4). Time
    • In an adequate-sized, mechanically sound system, when these conditions are met, bacteria will work.
