BACTERIA

Bacteria are living micro-organisms. They’re found in, and are necessary to, all types of natural organic life. Since they’re born, and since they grow and reproduce, they’re similar to animal life. Under relatively ideal conditions, they multiply at an un- believable rate, doubling in about 25 minutes.
Bacteria adhere to and penetrate dead organic matter until the matter is dissolved. Bacteria creep along the walls of pipes, drains and traps, and aren’t washed away until all grease or organic matter is removed.
However, bacteria are sensitive to changes in their environment. Parallel changes in their growth and reproduction directly affect their efficiency. Bacteria families in the sewage and sanitation field are affected by existing conditions in plumbing and sewer lines, traps and sewage disposal facilities. Temperature, pH or toxicity, water and time are the principal factors in establishing this climate.
There are two basic types of bacteria – aerobic bacteria, which must have oxygen to live and function properly, and anaerobic bacteria, which thrive in the absence of oxygen. In waste disposal systems, there are some locations where oxygen is present, and other locations where it is absent. So Northill Environment Products contains both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, along with enzymes in substantial quantities, in a well-balanced ratio.
ENZYMES
Bacterial or enzymatic action creates and sustains all living things. Lack of such action causes death. Enzymes promote digestion of organic food. They support the growth of tissues. They accelerate reproduction of plants and animals. They provide the energy which makes seeds grow. They make possible the conversion of dead organic matter to soluble food for plants. They liquefy organic waste. They combine with substances of a complicated or complex nature, and, by a process called catalysis, simple compounds. break these substances down into two or more
Simply defined, enzymes are organic catalysts. A catalyst is an “accelerator” which speeds up a chemical reaction. Some reactions take place very slowly, or not at all, without the impetus of a catalyst. A catalyst has the unusual property of
remaining unchanged after it performs its function. original form, to be used over and over again So it’s not used up, but continues to be present in its as long as organic matter is present.
Being organic, enzymes can’t be produced be planted, cultivated, and grown under controlled artificially in a laboratory or factory. But they can conditions. Or they can be extracted from animals like sheep or cattle, and from marine life and
vegetation.
Enzymes will work in a fairly broad range of temperatures, but they prefer 70 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. They’ll work effectively in the range of 40 to 170 degrees Fahrenheit or 21 to 37 degrees Celsius. Most enzymes are destroyed at 76 to 82 degrees Celsius. Below 40 degrees Fahrenheit or 4 degrees Celsius, their action is negligible. Below freezing, the action stops entirely. When enzymes are warmed again above the 40-degree Fahrenheit mark, action resumes. Nothing has been lost by the cooling.
Enzymes prefer a fairly neutral condition neither extremely acid nor extremely alkaline.
Enzyme actions are highly precise. Each enzyme has a specific purpose which restricts its action to a substance of a very definite type. Nature designed each enzyme to work on one particular substance. It will work only on that one, and will have no effect on any other.
Every life function is, in some way, dependent on enzyme action. The total number of enzyme types hasn’t yet been determined, but it will probably run into the millions.
We do know that four basic enzyme families are needed to help bacteria digest organic waste solids. NORTHILL Environmental Products contains these. They are the protease enzymes, which work on proteins; the diastase enzymes, which work on carbohydrates; the lipase enzymes, which work on fats and grease; and the cellulase enzymes, which work on cellulose.

WORKING TOGETHER

Bacteria are the micro-organisms nature has produced to control waste and recycle it to benefit plant life. If it weren’t for these micro-organisms, all the waste produced in the history of the world would now be piled on the face of the earth in a crust hundreds of feet thick. If this waste had not been converted into soluble food for plants, there would be no plant life – and consequently, no life
at all.
Bacteria convert dead organic matter to soluble food for plants. Bacteria can feed on simple substances, but they can’t digest the more complex substances without help. So bacteria have a “working agreement” with enzymes. Enzymes break down complex materials into one or more simple forms. Bacteria can then feed on these simple forms, reducing them to good enriching substances such as water, carbon dioxide and the basic elements. Bacteria digest solids completely.
It is needless to introduce large numbers of bacteria into a waste system unless the bacteria can live and grow. They can’t live unless they feed and they can’t feed without enzymes. Enzymes are chemically change 80,000 parts of food as you chew very potent. One enzyme in your saliva will it and prepare it for digestion. For organic waste digestion, there must be a well-balanced ratio of enzymes to bacteria.
Conversely, enzymes will perform only a smallIBU part of their function unless they’re supporting a proper ratio of bacteria.
The climate for bacterial growth is seldom ideal. When the climate is less than ideal, it’s necessary to furnish enzymes in order to strengthen the bacteria before they can attack accumulated waste. After bacteria are functioning strongly, they produce and excrete their own enzymes as needed. Enzymes can’t reproduce themselves as bacteria do.
Enzymes and bacteria must be water soluble in order to be carried to the solids they’re seeking as a food supply. NORTHILL contains material for creating water turbulence to circulate water and carry bacteria and enzymes to their food. In quiet water, they might not reach all the waste without this help.
Built-up solids sometimes form a film or hard crust which would be difficult for bacteria and enzymes to penetrate, but NORTHILL’s wetting agents soften this flinty crust for them.
